Election Commission to decide election date tomorrow

Election Commission of Pakistan

Pakistan’s Election Commission will decide on Tuesday 1st January 2008 whether to postpone the general election or not. The assassination of opposition leader Benazir Bhutto followed by the violence, especially in the south of the country, has created an atmosphere of uncertainity regarding the elections.

“We have called for reports from the provincial governments and provincial election commissioners on the situation. The reports will reach here by evening today and we will decide tomorrow.”

According to the commisson, ten Election Commission offices had been burnt in Sindh, the printing of ballots in Karachi had been halted and the security in two northwestern regions has raised doubts about voting there.

Bhutto’s son to lead her party

Bilawal and Asif Zardari

Benazir Bhutto’s 19-year-old son Bilawal appointed leader of her party and her husband Asif Ali Zardary will be the co-chairman, party officials say.

Some party members are concerned about Bilawal’s young age and his political inexperience and hence the party advisors will be leading the party until he finishes his studies.

PPP’s boycott of elections and the voilence following the assassination could threaten the process of elections and hence leading to the prolonging of the caretaker government.

Their have been reports of suicide bombing near the house of a leader of PML-Q and burning of election offices in sindh.

PPP to nominate new chief today

PPP Flag and Benazir Bhutto

An important meeting of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) will be held on Sunday (today) at the Larkana residence of life former chairperson Benazir Bhutto to chalk out the future line of action of the party regarding the general election as well as the nomination of the party chief.

The urgent meeting was summoned on Friday after the burial of Benazir and all CEC members and party office-bearers were asked to stay in Larkana till the meeting, to be held after the Soyem of the party chairperson.

Sources said there was no proper agenda for the meeting but the nomination of the party leadership and the election would be the main issues. Makhdoom Amin Fahim, senior vice chairman of the PPP, will preside over the CEC meeting. The party leaders were already busy in informal discussions about their future party leader.

84 flights of PIA and other airlines were cancelled / delayed

Air traffic remained largely disrupted on Friday and 84 flights of PIA and other airlines were either cancelled or delayed. The passengers faced an unusual situation at Islamabad International Airport on friday after the cancellation of 3 Karachi bound flights.

Benazir Bhutto knew her assassins

“Benazir Bhutto was also my sister, and I will be with you to take the revenge for her death [..] Don’t feel alone. I am with you. We will take the revenge on the rulers” , said Nawaz Sharif to the supporters of Benazir Bhutto after her assassination on 27th December 2007.

The assassination of opposition political leaders and activists has always been the practice of tyrants, dictators and imperialist occupiers. Israel has long practiced such assassinations with the complicity of the United States. (more…)
